What an exciting school year 2012 - 2013 is!
We are learning and having fun!
This year the Tacoma Public Schools has adopted the AVID program in grades 5 through 12. This program was developed to ensure all students become better prepared for learning. The elementary framework of this program is to provide organization, using planners, binders, time management, and goal setting tools. WICOR is an acronym for our writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading techniques that will be taught. Each fifth grader has a binder, pencil packet, planner and dividers to help them organize their work throughout the year. A take-home folder is provided for each student to carry home corrected work and bulletins.
Every night parents please initial your child's planner
in the far right column.

A special library with over 4,000 books has been created with many Accelerated Reader books for students to check out. Once an AR book is read, a computer generated test is administered. Students earn points for reading these books. Special certificates will be awarded at the end of the school year to those students who earn a high number of AR points.

All skills will be taught at school for special homework assignments so students can work independently or with very little supervision. The homework policy for fifth grade is to work 40 to 50 minutes each night. Reading for 20 minutes a night is a school-wide expectation for all students.
Each Monday through Thursday:
study and learn math facts
learn the weekly spelling words
read AR books
finish any daily assignments not completed in class
complete special assigned homework
Absences do not excuse students from assignments. For each day missed, students will receive the same number of days to complete any missed work and return it to school.
