  • It’s Summer Opportunity Application Time! Help your mentees avoid summer melt and gain valuable experience with one of the following opportunities:
    • Summer Jobs 253 applications are open now, and closing February 15th. This is a fantastic opportunity for your sophomores and juniors to gain their first work experience and get paid! The application is easier to fill out this year, and available here: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=iLOhd89aK0m_QmTLsIfQTGGKeTZt2JdJgFtEltI6SEVUMVI4UEZYVlVaRkJWOEYwRFEwTU5GSVRNWC4u. (Or just click on the link all the way at the bottom of the main school website at tsota.org)
    • Nurse Camp is now accepting applications. The window will close March 2nd or when they receive the first 250 complete applications, whichever comes first. Nurse Camp is a free 1 week opportunity for students to participate in a highly regarded, competitive program for future allied health professionals. It is open to sophomores and juniors who have not previously participated. The application is available here: https://www.multicare.org/nurse-camp/
    • The Tacoma Tool Center is currently recruiting a cohort of graduating seniors, to begin June 18th. This is a 12 week  pre-apprenticeship program that offers a trades-discovery curriculum. Additionally, supportive services (tools, clothing, transportation, and needs-related payments are available) as well as a stipend for reaching training and employment milestones. This is a great opportunity for graduating seniors to enter a trade! If you know of someone who may be interested, please have them contact Venus Dean-Bullinger at Cell: 253-380-1658 or email at Venus@soundoutreach.org. Students must pass a drug screening.
    • The Tacoma MedPartnership Summer CNA program will be taking applicants soon. Please encourage your mentees with an interest in nursing or healthcare to email me if they would like to be notified when the application window opens, at jboutel@tacoma.k12.wa.us. This free program is intended for sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in a future career in nursing. LPNs are now required to earn their Certified Nursing Assistant credential prior to entering an LPN program. This is an especially powerful opportunity for students who may not be going the four year nursing degree route to become a Registered Nurse.
    • The Tideflats Certification Program will also be taking applications soon. This free summer program opportunity is for current juniors with an interest in environmental science, fire fighting, logistics, transportation, or just gaining some great certifications that are useful for a wide variety of employment opportunities. The industries located at the Port of Tacoma are huge local employers, and this is a great way in! It also looks great on college applications. :) If you have juniors who are interested, please have them email Chris Sieg at csieg@tacoma.k12.wa.us. Students must pass a drug screening.
  • Don’t forget about VANIs! Turn completed VANIs in as soon as possible. A completed VANI is:
    • The VANI cover sheet signed by the student
    • A High School & Beyond Plan document describing the student’s plan – this is not a legally binding document, it is ok if students are not 100% certain they are going to a particular school.
    • Their acceptance letter(s) or an email from the college or university indicating acceptance. (If applicable)
    • Please have students staple these pieces together. Completed VANIs go to Jennifer Boutell’s mailbox in the Post Office at SOTA, or the Next Move inbox in Portable G at SAMI.
    • All forms are now available in one .zip package available here: https://www.tacomaschools.org/next-move/Pages/Documents-and-Materials.aspx
