Dear Kindergarten Families
My goal is to update on the weekends since I can't find time otherwise. This is how it will probably look.
Happy weekend families. Boy has the weather changed abruptly. Please remember to dress you child in layers and warm clothes. I have gotten calls from parents who are noticing that coats and jackets are sometimes not getting home. I try to keep an eye on this and remind kids to take the home but sometimes they get left outside and in the lunchroom. If this happens they will end up in the lost and found which is taking over our hallway at this point. If you are missing any clothing please come in and check to see if they ended up their. I take the kids to music by there twice a week and sometime they find their things there on their own.
In Math we took our first assessment on Unit 1. Most of the kids did great. We will talk about how you can help your child in math and reading at our partnership conferencing, which I would like to start soon. I will send out a note and set a schedule in the next week.
The kids are making exciting progress in reading. Some of you are noticing that they are bringing the same reading homework home that they had the previous week. That is intentional and kids should read it every night.
This week we are learning the sound /s/. Spider in the soup. So far we have done A,E,H,K,M,R, and now S. We are also working on sight words, I, I'm, see, am, Sam, me, the, and, and said. Please practice as much as you can and encourage children to be writing them as well as reading them.
I would like to begin a game night once or twice a month for our kiddos and families. I have to make aragements with the principal, custodiand, and the district people. If you have any ideas toward that I would love to hear them. I will keep you posted as I get it more planned.
Our class is not doing any celebrations for October. Instead we are going to have a feast in November. Last year we did stone soup and the kids had a great time. This will take place the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving break and I will be asking for veggies and parent helpers. In December we build gingerbread houses. At that point I will be asking for candies, frosting, and lots of helpers.
I will leave last weeks notes on in case some of you wanted to look at it and did not get a chance.
I have been asked about rainy day recess. The school policy is that when it is very rainy outside the kids will have recess in the gym. Otherwise it is up to the parents to dress their child warmly for the weather. Coats can be taken off but it is the time of the year where they may be necessary for the kids comfort. If your child is uncomfortable outside they can sit under the eves right outside the door. But even with this they need to be dressed warmly and have access to a coat. If anybody needs help getting a coat for their child please let me know and I will make sure they have one.
It was suggested by a couple of parents that we let the kids come in the classroom to play. Unfortunately this is the only time without children in the classroom when the teachers can collaborate with each other and get materials ready for the afternoon and special projects. We are not in our classrooms for the whole time and most days very little. So again please make sure your child is dressed for the climate.
This week we worked on the letter Mm. The kids need to practice making the capital M correctly. Start at the top, straight line down, frog jump up, curve line down, stop, don't lift but make a curve line up to the top, don't lift and make a straight line down to the boot line. For some reason 90% of the kids want to start from the bottom and go up. We'll get there. Next week we will be working on Rr. Rr says /r/. Rooster on the roof. /R/, /r/, /r/.
On Monday we will be taking our first unit test in math. I am anxious to see how the kids do. I will send them home by the end of the week.
In science we continue to investigate wood.
Just for fun, we took a spider walk and saw the art work the spiders spun for us one misty morning. The kids were awed. It is so much fun to see the kids discovering the wonders that have always been around them and they didn't even know it.
I am ready for volunteers during our reading block between 1:15 to 2:10. I would be asking you to monitor centers and free choice reading activities as well as some writing and one on one reading. Please let me know if you have the time.
Our first party isn't until Wednesday before the Thanksgiving break so all you parents who are wanting to help plan the party, you have some time yet.
Have a great week.
And thanks for all you do.
working on Aa, Ee, Kk, and Hh so far. Your child would benefit from
any practice you could talk them into. They should know the sound
and be practicing writing it. We are sounding out words to write.
We call it stretching and shrinking and then we bump it out and
figure out the letters that make the sounds. Ask you child for a
demonstration. If you are confused you can stop by Tuesday, or
Thursday afternoon or in the morning between 8:00 and 8:30 and I
will show you how we do it.
We are working on numbers 1-10. How to make them, identify them and what they mean. A good way to practice is by playing number games with dice, or counting parts of their dinner (like how many peas are on your plate?) (Can you make a group of 8 pieces of corn?) Stuff like that takes very little time and solidifies the numbers in their heads.
WE are practing our whisper voice. If you could practice at home as well the kids might be able to maintain it for a while. We are up to about a minute and a half which is pretty hard for kinders. I have a couple that are quite loud and need practice whispering. We call it a level 1 voice.
-I am ready for volunteers. I have a couple things I am looking for. 1)Reading helpers, we do small groups start at 1:00 and last until 1:45. I need a parent to monitor independent seat work while I am doing the small groups. 2) Science helpers, not to start for another week so I can see what it is going to look like. 3)Busy work such as tearing pages out of books, cutting, and stuff like that.
-We are going to be in need of additional supplies sooner than I thought. These guys are going through the crayons like crazy. If you are out shopping or find some on sale and would like to donate color crayons the kids and I would greatly appriciate it.
-I am looking for a party parent. If you like to organize parties and would like to volunteer... the kids would not have to rely on me (a terrible party planner).
-Please take the finished work that I have already looked at, and put in the Thursday folders. That is for you to marvel at with your student and then file it however you feel is best.
Thanks for all you do.
