Welcome to Mindfulness Social Emotional Learning

In order to help your child be as successful as possible in all of their endeavors, Sherman Elementary School will be using the MindUp and Mindful Schools Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs school wide, in all classrooms.  

 

The MindUp curriculum will be delivered throughout the day by your child’s teacher through the use of lively instruction, modeling, and coaching that invites inquiry, exploration, discussion, problem solving, and conflict resolution, through literature, the arts, and project based learning.

 

The Mindful Schools curriculum will be taught in your child’s class twice a week for fifteen minutes by our school psychologist, Dr. Jay Schneller and Parent Volunteer, Celesta Smith, both of whom have been trained to deliver this instruction. The Mindful Schools Curriculum is designed to promote attention, emotion regulation, adaptability, compassion, resilience, interpersonal skills and academic success through the development of mindfulness and heartfulness.  

 

Mindfulness is the moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, sensations and surrounding environment.

 

Heartfulness is the intentional nurturing of positive mind states such as kindness and compassion.

 

Teachers will receive regular in-service training and support in implementing these programs.

Informational meetings for parents are scheduled for Friday 9/9, 9/16, 9/30, 10/14 & 10/28 at 3:00 pm in the Library.

 

Both of these programs have been used by thousands of educators across the state, country, and world, using developmentally appropriate language for explaining key mindfulness concepts and practices to youth. Both of these programs have been used in the Tacoma Public Schools (Blix & DeLong Elementary Schools) in support of The Whole Child Initiative in collaboration with the University of Washington-Tacoma and Comprehensive Life Resources.
