Reading (whole class)- Please have your child (first graders and second graders) practice reading the TSI sight words. We want them to develop automaticity so they can become fluent readers. They are assessed frequently and graph their scores to monitor their progress.
Reading Mastery is the district curriculum and what is utilized in our classroom. Students are assessed and placed in a small reading group at their instructional level. They have "Take-Homes" that correspond with the daily reading lesson. They will have completed one in class and do one at home for extra practice. Please have your child complete it and return it the next day. We will check it off and return it daily. We encourage you to help your child save them and compile them in a notebook so he/she has them to practice. As students master letter sounds, blends, digraphs, etc, the work will become more challenging, so it's beneficial to have them to review and practice.
Have your child read at least 4-5 nights per week. For students who aren't proficient readers, read to them. READ, READ, READ all you can!
Math Please have your child practice counting and math facts. Notes/Worksheets specific for your child will come home and he/she should practice daily as part of his/her homework. We will be using Math Expressions, the adopted math curriculum for Tacoma. (Remember, please work daily on skills specific to your child.)
Writing Please remind your child to use proper letter formation, correct spacing, and to write on the line when doing homework.
Science We are doing first grade science this year (designed for kindergarten - second grades). Watch for related activities to come home. Please have your child use the vocabulary words and share what he/she has learned. I will send "Word Bank" lists and "What I Know/Learned" fact sheets home. These have been generated in class with the students and are important vocabulary words, concepts, and information the students should learn and understand. Don't forget to go to www.fossweb.com to see science activities we are doing in class, vocabulary words, and games.
