I.                   COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Through the process of storytelling, this beginning digital media course will explore both technical and aesthetic understandings of still and motion photography. Students will build a portfolio of work through project-based assignments that focus on telling a story that can be published on the Oakland High School website or affiliated websites.

 

II.                SECTIONS

⦁ Use Adobe software to edit photography and video

⦁ Manage work flow, including storing digital files

⦁ Use series of photographs and video images to tell coherent stories

⦁ Work well individually and well in groups to   complete projects

 

III.             TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED

  • There are no textbooks for this class. There will be occasional assigned readings or videos to watch and they will be available in class or online. You will need to come prepared with a pen or pencil.

           

IV.              INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

  • This class will include
    • Lecture days defining important concepts, terminology, and methods
    • Discussions in workshop settings
    • Individual and group-work time on projects

 

V.                 ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES:

Formative assignments (15%) and summative projects (85%) will be graded on designated criteria. Variations and imagination thereafter are encouraged. Completed projects will not be graded upon style as this factor varies from artist to artist. As a portion of specific projects, students will typically be graded upon COMPOSITION, CONTENT, CREATIVITY, and PUBLISHING. I value QUALITY, IMAGINATION, and INNOVATION.

VII.           CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

Rules:

⦁ Observe Oakland High School rules at all times, both in the classroom and on location

⦁ Keep things CLEAN and TIDY

⦁ Make the world better than you found it 

Students will be expected to attend class ready to work in groups and/or independently. Unexcused absences will be counted against the participation grade. Students will also be expected to work respectfully with each other and to keep the building a safe and positive creative environment. Negative or hostile language will not be tolerated. Four goals — empathy, balance, community and thinking — will be expected to be expressed at all times.

Policies:

⦁ No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom due to equipment

⦁ The Internet will be used for classroom assignments only (see page 3)

⦁ According to the Oakland Handbook, electronic devices (CELL PHONES, MP3 Players, CD players, handheld video games etc.) are not allowed to be used nor be seen in the classroom. Students may use such devices in the hallway or cafeteria before school, during lunch, and after school. These items are not appropriate for use in the classroom setting and will be confiscated. If you have a personal emergency, share this with the teacher and ask permission to come to the main office to use your phone. Students who bring these items to school are advised to do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for loss of these items. Students who abuse the use of electronics will be subject to progressive discipline to include possible suspension.

ASSIGNMENTS & ATTENDANCE: 

With the technical aspect of Digital Photography, it is paramount that you show up to class. It will prove impossible for you to understand your work and complete your projects otherwise.  Moreover, assignments should be handed in on time. Students are assessed separately (from project content) for “meeting project deadline”

• On due date = 4

• Next class meeting date = 3

• One week = 2

• After a week = 1

• After a week I will determine on a case by case basis whether to accept the assignment at all

IX. INTERNET ACCEPTABLE ON-LINE and MEDIA PRODUCTION BEHAVIOR 

Use of the Internet and producing media provides great educational benefits to students. Unfortunately, however, some material accessible via the Internet, or produced by a student, may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, or potentially offensive to some people. Access to the Internet and media technology is given as a privilege to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. We require that students and parent/guardians read and sign the following rules for acceptable on-line and media production behavior. 

1. Students are responsible for good behavior on the Internet just as they are in school. General school rules for behavior and communications apply.

2. Network storage areas are and may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files will always be private.

3. The following are NOT permitted:

a. Sending or receiving non-school related e-mail; sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures; chat rooms are off limits as is printing inappropriate material not related to a school assignment.

b. Using obscene language.

c. Listening to music and/or watching videos not associated with school work.

d. Harassing, insulting, or attacking others.

e. Damaging camera equipment, computers, computer systems, or computer networks.

f. Violating copyright laws; downloading files.

g. Using another students’ password.

h. Trespassing in another students’ folder, work, or files; trespassing in system folders and files.

i. Intentionally wasting limited resources, including through the use of “chain letters” and messages broadcasted to mailing lists or individuals.

j. Employing the network for commercial purposes.

k. Revealing the personal address or phone number of yourself or any other person without permission from the instructor. 

4. Violations may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal actions.


X. DAILY CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 

1. START OF CLASS:

Join the class in the center circle and participate in the daily "Entry Task."

2. DAILY AGENDA:

Students will follow the "Plan of the Day" and participate in all activities and complete assignments.

3. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT:

Students will check out equipment for use on class assignments and/or individual or group projects. Checked-out equipment must be returned to the teacher by the end of each class period.

4. END OF CLASS:

All students will assist with clean up and shutdown of the classroom: including picking up trash from the floor, returning equipment and furniture to designated areas, and logging out of and cleaning up their individual workstations.
