Homework
The first part of our homework centers on reading. I expect every student to read for 30 minutes every night at home. Make sure your child records the title of the book and a short description of what they read.
For five of those minutes, they should Read for Speed. Your child should quickly read a passage on their reading level for one minute then count how many correct words they read. Every word should be clear, every sentence meaningful. (By the end of the school year, all second graders should read at or above 90 correct words per minute.) If you need another packet of fluency reading passages, give me a call at 571-4828. Otherwise, feel free to use library or home books.
MATH
The second part of homework has to do with math. Tacoma School District uses Math Expressions, a program from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: ( http://www.eduplace.com/math/mthexp/g2/index.html ). Every day I will teach a new concept or reintroduce a familiar one. Every night your child should complete their math practice paper.
If you need more math ideas, check out the "Links" page of this website. There are a lot of really great sites that I link to, which will keep your young one working and happy for quite a while!
I usually do not send homework home on Fridays.
