Dear Math Parents/Guardians,
The first week in December is conference week. The fifth grade team is asking that you meet with your child’s homeroom teacher first. Then, if you still have questions regarding grades from the other classes, we can schedule those conferences either before or after school following conference week.
This is a great week to work on math with your child and he/she won’t even know it! Think of the elapsed time problems. You need to be at grandma’s house at 3:30 and it’s a 40-minute drive. What time do you need to leave your house? What factors contributed to your being late? What factors contributed to your being early?!? (Dad/mom, I hope you didn’t speed!) The turkey is going to take four hours to cook, ½ hour to stuff and prepare, and 15 minutes to cool. We want to eat at 4:15. What time does the turkey need to go in the oven? Let your child figure out the timing of your meal, but check their math or you might be eating LATE!
Take your child shopping. (Good week for that!) Have them take their own money and pay. First have them estimate the amount. Then go to the counter and pay. If short, he/she might gain a better understanding of safe estimates verses regular estimates.
Convert that TV time and reading time from minutes to hours and back again!
Cooking is a great time to figure out how much you need and what to do with the remainder! For planning, everyone gets a half of a potato. We have seven people. How many potatoes do we need? What do we do with the left over? Throw it away? No way!!!
The more a family thinks and talks math, the more students will understand there is math in everything we do. They get really excited when they see the math their parents do. Math is everywhere!
Have a great, sunny, and math filled break.
If you ever want to view your child’s AR points you may access it through the web page https://hosted4.renlearn.com/297012/HomeConnect/Login.aspx. Your child knows their code! Remember student required points are from “outside of classroom assigned books.” Also, if you would like to know if a book is AR material, you may find out through www.arbookfind.com.
