Dear First Grade Families,
We have been very busy in First Grade. We have been practicing sight words, math facts to ten and solving story problems using DEALS. The students use DEALS to help them remember the steps needed to solve the story problem. DEALS means:
D-Draw (under line facts and draw proof drawing)
E-Equation (math problem)
L-Label (What is the proof drawing?)
S-Strategy (How did you solve the problem?)
First graders do receive homework assignments Monday-Thursday. Daily homework usually consists of completing a a sight word practice page, a math page, reading aloud to a family member for 10 or more minutes, and practicing weekly spelling words. I want to thank you, in advance, for helping your child complete and return their HOMEWORK and reading logs throughout this school year. The extra practice the math homework and at-home reading provides is extremely important to your child's success at school. Reading Logs must be turned in FRIDAY.
You can find a copy of each week's First Grade News in the documents sections (left side of this page). The First Grade News will be sent home with your student at the beginning of each week. A copy of the newsletter will be placed on the SWIFT site each week (just in case the one sent is misplaced).
In your student's report card was a school supplies list. Just in case this list has been misplaced I have included a copy of Larchmont's list (all grades) and a list for just my classroom. Both of these documents can be copied from the documents section of my swift page. The supplies for Mrs. Olin's first grade class are:
1 container Clorox wipes 1 box of 24 crayons
I will provide folders to keep classwork in and a folder for homework to go to and from school.
The math curriculum, Math Expressions, provides math homework almost everyday. There will be some exceptions (Fridays, pre/post test days). Many of the homework assignments will require your student to SHOW their work (write the math problem and draw a picture).
Please help your child to remember to dress for the weather. We do have two recesses, usually outside, weather permitting. Bringing a sweatshirt or coat to school is a big help. Our room is often cooler than other rooms, so if your child tends to be cold, please send a sweatshirt or sweater for him/her to wear in class; winter coats make it difficult to work in the classroom.
School starts at 9:00 am. The students may begin entering the building at 8:40 am to have breakfast in the cafeteria. School is dismissed this year at 3:30 pm. Please meet your child by the flagpole in the front of the building, if you will be picking them up.
We have to accommodate 4 different lunches this year. Our lunch is from 11:30-11:55. Recess is from 11:55-12:20.
Tacoma Public Schools offers Free and Reduced priced lunches for eligible students. Eligibility is determined by household income and size. Free and Reduced Lunch forms need to be returned to the school office by October 1st.
Our PE days are Monday (11:00-11:30) and Wednesday (11:00-11:30). Students should dress for active play on these days (appropriate shoes and pants/shorts). Thanks!
