We are so excited to start the 2016-2017 school year again with YOUR child. 6th & 7th grade is a great year of growth socially and academically. We will continue to work hard at becoming awesome community learners as well as becoming great mathematicians.
According to the Common Core standards, in grade 7th grade, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2)developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
Grade 6th & 7th we are covering the following standards:
In this class, your student will expand on the skills he/she developed in the 5th grade encompassing five domains:
- Ratios and Proportions
- The Number System
- Expressions & Equations
- Statistics & Probability
You can visit the website below to learn more about the CCSS:
We will explore the above concepts through the Mathematical Practices:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Model with mathematics
- Use appropriate tools strategically
- Attend to precision
- Look for and make use of structure
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
We are starting the year with a lot of frontloading of classroom routines and precedures, team building, AVID strategies, and interactive notebooks. Our first unit of math will be on ratios and proportinal resoning.
