Students receive homework assignments each day, even Fridays. Students bring their daily homework home in a RED FOLDER. Homework assignments are also listed on the left hand side of THE SECOND GRADE SCOOP, our classroom newsletter, which students bring home on Mondays. Students are expected to complete each math homework assignment that is given and return it to school the following day in their RED FOLDER. Students are also required to read 10 or more minutes each night (see THE SECOND GRADE SCOOP for the required minimum minutes). Book titles and the amount of time spent reading each day should be recorded on the READING LOG (printed on the back of THE SECOND GRADE SCOOP). An adult should sign the reading log daily. READING LOGS are due on Fridays. Spelling words can be practiced a few minutes each night. Please see the current SECOND GRADE SCOOP for the date of the final spelling test each week (it changes).
when listening to your child read at home:
*PAUSE* If your child comes to a tricky word, allow your child 3 seconds to solve it. Encourage your child to reread or self-correct their error.
*PROMPT* If your child gets stuck, ask, "What can you do?" Provide prompts such as: 1) look at the picture, 2) look for smaller words or chunks you know, 3) check the first and last letter of the word, 4) think about what makes sense.
If all else fails, it's fine to tell your child the word!
*PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE* Praise your child when they read well, correct themselves, or use your hints/strategies to help them figure out an unknown word.
