Announcements

We will be using the Kindergarten "READ WELL" reading program. I am very excited about this program as it helps students with letter recognition, letter sounds, word recognition, and reading. If all goes well, your child should be reading by the end of the year. It is a very sequential program that is age appropriate and it is a lot of fun! This program will begin in October. All students are assessed to find their individual instruction level in reading and then grouped for reading instruction at their level with peers also working at their level. We have found this to be very effective in supporting our students in making reading progress. After each unit (every 1-2 weeks) students will be assessed and results will be sent home along with practice stories and a list of any sounds or words your child may need additional work on.
Our math program "MATH EXPRESSIONS" is very "hands on". You will be seeing some worksheets, but many of our daily activities will be "hands on". We use many manipulatives to figure out problems.Group discussion also helps students express how they came up with their answers. I feel this program will get your child ready for first grade success in math.
We will begin our "READ AT HOME" program in October! This is so important for language skills and communication. Be sure to have your child retell the story as this will help build very important comprehension skills. I will collect these reading logs at the end of each month.
We will also begin our "FOSS SCIENCE " in October. This is a very exciting, hands-on curriculum as well. The kids love it! Our first unit will be exploring ANIMALS 2 x 2. In the spring we will begin exploring WOOD & PAPER. I try to deal with all
DISCIPLINE problems in the classroom. Each child is responsible for his/her own actions. If a child continues to need reminders for a certain action, he/she will receive a short 1-2 minute time out to think about their actions and how to improve on these. If a problem becomes serious, I will tell you personally, but this very rarely happens as Kindergarten students always want to please their teacher. What a great group of students I have this year. I can tell they have been raised to be very respectful and polite!
Many classroom supplies will be provided for you child. School supplies brought from home(e.g. gluesticks, tissue) will be
shared throughout the year to help with management.
I will be sending home a WEEKLY FOLDER. Inside will be your child's homework for the week. ALL homework will be turned in at the end of each week. Be sure to check your child's backpack daily!!!
