11/13/2013 Hard to believe it but Thanksgiving is almost here. Sometimes events happen that remind us to stop and consider what we have to be grateful for in our lives. For me the typhoon hitting the Phillipines with the huge loss of life, the recent unexpected passing of a family friend, and a cancer diagnosis for one of my closest friends have helped remind me how lucky I am. I wondered what my Advisory students would say about this if I asked them to write about the things they are grateful for. I imagined I would hear a lot about cell phones and iPods but I heard very little of that. Instead they spoke about family and friends. Here are some of their comments:
"I am thankful for my mom because she buys me things...I love the sounds of my instruments..."
"I am thankful for everything but what I am most thankful for is my family. Without my mom and dad I would not be where I am today."
"I am thankful for my parents without them I would not be where I am today...at school getting my education."
"I am thankful for my friends. they are always there when I need someone to vent to."
"I am thankful for my dad. He keeps me on track, teaches me things, keeps a roof over my head..."
" I am thankful for my wonderful mom. She does so much for me...I know some kids don't have a mom. I am greatful for mine. I just love her."
"I am thankful for having an education and for both my parents."
I am thankful for my students. I have great students this year who remind everyday that being here, present in the moment with them is important. Through good days and bad we move forward with our learning - about science, about each other, about life. I recognize that I have a loving family, a job, and a home; so many blessings. Thank you for letting me share. I hope that this Thanksgiving finds you and yours safe, warm, and with someone that cares.
A final reminder. As an AVID school EVERY student is expected to have a 3 inch white binder and appropriate supplies in class EVERYDAY. Many students understand and comply with this requirement but some are struggling. Students were provided the first binder and materials free of charge at the beginning of the year. Additional materials may be purchased at a very reduced price if needed but it is the student's responsibility to arrive in class EVERYDAY with the tools they need to learn - binder, paper, pencils, pens, color pencils, and erasers. Please help your student come to class prepared to learn. Students who make it to class without required materiasl are a disruption to the learning process as we must scramble to find them paper, pencils, pens, etc. Your support is appreciated.
Respectfully and With Gratitude,
AVID binder and planner in your hands!
