Downing Elementary 2016-2017
Welcome to Mrs. Zartner’s 4th Grade
My name is Caroline Zartner, and I am very excited to be your child’s 4th grade teacher for the 2016-2017 school year! I am looking forward to a fun filled year of academic learning and social growth! This will be my 29th year of teaching with experience in teaching all grade levels K-6, fourteen years in teaching 4th. My first 25 years of teaching were in Warrenton, OR. I recently married and moved to Tacoma. I have a BS in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University, a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Supervision Leadership from University of Portland. In March, I received my Professional Certification for WA state.
As a teacher, I strive to improve myself by meeting my students where they are as learners and provide a learning environment where all students are respected and will feel safe to take risks as they improve and grow as learners. I also believe it is necessary to challenge students in meeting my following expectations:
Persevere by trying your best on each and every assignment (Responsible)
Arrive on time, prepared for class (Responsible)
Respect everyone's right to learn and make safe choices (Respectful & Safe)

Weekly Homework Folders - will be sent home each Friday. Please have your child complete the homework assignments as you sign and review for neatness and accuracy. Homework is returned to class as soon as all work is neatly and accurately completed, or by the following Friday, the latest. On Fridays, we will have a Spelling Test which includes knowing the definition by writing the word correctly in context.
Daily Assignments – not completed during the classroom, designated work time, will be circled in RED in your child’s Planner. Incomplete assignments need to be completed at home that night and turned in the next morning at 9:00, to receive credit. Unfinished daily assignments will be circled in RED in your child’s Planner. Please sign Planners every night and include any questions or concerns. This will serve as our daily communication. Please check ALL work for neatness and accuracy. Any sloppy work will be returned to be completed neatly.
Nightly Reading – Your child is responsible for reading at least 30 minutes each night, completing their Daily Reading Log, and taking at least one AR test per week. We will be using the Book-It Program so start adding up those minutes now!
TWCI (Tacoma Whole Child Initiative)
TWCI gives students a new way to think about behavior. TWCI provides a positive, effective alternative to traditional methods of discipline. Students following our school wide & classroom rules will be recognized and celebrated during SOM assemblies.
We will have monthly/seasonal parties/celebrations, rewards, etc. for students completing all assignments, neatly and turned in on time.
Please consider joining PTA and attending our monthly meetings. We do a lot of fund raising activities and organize school events. It would be great to have you join us and share your ideas.
Our programs and children benefit greatly from the wonderful support of our classroom volunteers. If you have a craft, talent, or project you would like to share with our students, please approach me with your idea. Volunteer forms are available in the office and MUST be completed before you can volunteer.
I look forward to being partners in your child’s education and building a lasting and supportive relationship with you and your child.
