Throughout the year you will encounter me referencing DIBELS. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are standardized, individually administered tests of various reading skills. They are given three times a year: September, January and May. In Kindergarten, there are several skills tested: Letter Naming Fluency, Initial Sound Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, and Nonsense Word Fluency. Not all skills are assessed at the same time.
Popcorn words are sight words. Students entering first grade should be able to read most of the First 100 sight words from Fry's Instant Words. These are common words first graders should read without hesitation or sounding out. Thus we work on them all year in Kindergarten! The May goal for Kindergartners is 100 words. If your child has already met the year-end goal, he/she will work on the Second 100 words which I will provide to them.
