Homework

Reading
Please read with your child at least 20 minutes each night and initial the Home Reading Log located at the back of your child's red homework folder for credit each day!
Beginning in October, take advantage of our classroom
Book Bag Check Out program!
This is a great program because it allows students to check out a new book on their reading level as often as they like; providing them books to read during their 20 minutes of reading homework.
Students must bring back thier book bag and previously checked out book in order to check out a new book. If a book is lost, please try your best to find it. If after looking, and find that the book is indeed lost, bring in a gently used book to replace it. Thans for helping to keep our check out library full of great books for all to enjoy.
Sight Words
Students entering first grade should have a sight word bank of at least 50 words. These are words that they can read with automaticity (in 3 seconds or less with no sounding out).
Sight words should be practiced often as part of your child's weekly homework. The year-end goal for first grade is 200 words; however, most children memorize all 300 of the first grade sight words by the end of the school year.
Check out my "Links" tab for on-line games to help with sight word recognition.
If you would like an additional copy of the sight word lists, please visit my "Documents" tab. In the "Documents" tab, you will also find sight words on Powerpoint. The Powerpoints are timed so that you know if your child is able to read each word within three seconds. The sight word phrase practice sheets and Power Points available are made up of three or more sight words strung together. These phrases are helpful in increasing students' reading fluency.
Math
The district adopted math curriculum, Math Expressions, will include daily math worksheets that are to be completed by your child, corrected by you, and returned the following day.

Math Facts
Please study math fact flashcards with your child as part of his/her weekly homework! They will be expected to know addition and subtraction facts 1-10, with fluency, by the end of the school year.
Check out my links tab for fun on-line math fact practice activities or
look under the "Documents" tab for printable math fact cards.
Memorizing the "Doubles Rap" will help students recall their doubles addition facts to ten quickly. The "Doubles Rap" can be found in your child's poetry binder. (You can also print an additional copy by clicking on the "Documents" tab and then "Doubles Rap.")
